Optional Closing Tags in HTML

REDEN
For as long as I've been validating web pages, I never realized that the closing </head> tag was optional in HTML. I feel as if I've missed the boat at times.

While I'm all for trimming excess code, I just cannot for the life of me strip out closing tags because they are optional in HTML. I'd be concerned that something, somewhere would not parse the document correctly if I removed the closing </head> element.

Are my concerns unfounded?

Hi,

in XHTML all tags must be closed. So, I do not see any advantage.

the main browsers Internet Explorer, Firefox an i think Opera too understand nearlay every non-closed tag.

in some cases the logical context forces to close them, i.e. in tables. If you dont close td or tr, nobody knows where the row or cell ends, that would result in chaos.

BUT:
If you dont close all tags except some special ones (br for example) your site won't pass the HTML / XTHML validation an you have no guarantee that your site will be displayed properly in other browsers.

Follow the XHTML standard, this ist they best way.
